Aikido is a typically defensive and unique form of self-defense. Aikido techniques don't lend themselves to brutal attacks but the achievement of full control and harmony. From this point of view, Aikido is recognised to be the most ethically perfect form of fighting.

There are throws, levers and immobilization in the Aikido technical repertoire, as well as exercises with sticks (jo) and swords (bokken). During training one concentrates especially on carrying out techniques, co-ordination of body movement, mutual collaboration and on non-aggressive behaviour. One can train in Aikido regardless of age or physical fitness.

Aikido is a real Budo. This means that warrior training is not perceived as a means to victory over all others, but as a means to ennoblement and self-perfection.

A well-known saying of O'Sensei "Masakatsu Agatsu" ("Real victory is victory over yourself") embodies the whole essence of the spirit of Aikido.
